Robert joined the British Army Medical Corps in 1876 at which point at which point he changed his middle name to ‘Arthur’. He saw active service during the Zulu War (1879); the First Boer War, in particular at Bronckhorst Spruit (December 1880); and in Sudan (mid-1880s). He was honorably discharged in 1896. Born at his parents’ home in Stamford, Lincolnshire. Awarded his Bachelors degree in 1854 and ordained as a deacon at Lincoln the following year. Ordained as a priest in 1856 and received his Masters degree in 1857. First post was as Curate of Beeston, Nottinghamshire from 1858 to1859 and from there to Whitton in Lincolnshire 1859; Radcliffe-on-Trent 1859-1865 and Shelford in Nottinghamshire 1867-1870 before moving north to become the vicar of the village of Thixendale where he remained for the rest of his life.
