Bell Robert Arthur (1856 – 1914) Born in 1856 in Thixendale to William and Margaret Bell as Robert Anthony Bell. Robert joined the British Army Medical Corps in 1876 at which point at which point he changed his middle name to ‘Arthur’. He saw active service during the Zulu War (1879); the First Boer War, in particular at Bronckhorst Spruit (December 1880); and in Sudan (mid-1880s). He was honorably discharged in 1896. His wife was Emma Doughty (Gosport) and together they had 5 children. The family moved to Canada in 1909 and settled in British Columbia. Thanks to Del Cunningham. Robert Arthur Bell

According to Tim Owston of York: An interesting women who ended up in York Prison for the suspicious disposal of her baby grandchild, the child of her daughter Catherine . Ann’s husband Thomas Dale/Dales was a bit of an alcoholic.

My name is Wyn Bulmer I was born in Thixendale in 1929 in Jewison Row. My maiden name was Welburn and we lived in the village for several years then moved to a cottage at the Grange. I have a brother, an uncle and aunt buried in the churchyard. I love the village and try to get back as often as possible. I now live near Doncaster.

Clarke Richard (circa 1881) Help Thought to be stationmaster at Burdale in 1881. He lived then at the station house with his daughters Amelia and Matilda (aged 31 and 19 respectively) and his son Francis M (Frank) aged 21 (his other children had left home by then). Richard may have been a widower at that time as his wife Jane is not mentioned in the 1881 census of the area.

Eyre & Martha had 13 children. All are now deceased without a male offspring to carry on the Coates name. Most are named below (Not in order of appearance).

* ROSE, married Albert Brayshaw. Both lived with Ken until the 1950’s then moved around E. Yorkshire finishing up in Malton where Albert still lives in good health. He was born in the now demolished cottages at Burdale Tunnel Top. His mother, Mrs Reeves, his brother Ken & sister Margaret then moved into Jewison Row now demolished.

Probably my earliest memory was going into their house and seeing a candle, the only means of lighting, sat on a tin, much the same as a small biscuit tin, with the name “RADIANCE” written on it. Rose was my mother. I was born in Thixendale in Jan 1944.

Coates Fred At the school circa 1919. Son of Eyre and Martha Coates. Left Thixendale in the early 1940s to set up on his own as the blacksmith in Sheriff Hutton and lived in the village of Whenby. He died of cancer in the early 1960s.
Coates Harry (Ken) ( – 1992) Son of Eyre and Martha Coates. Carried on the blacksmith’s business, spending one day each week at Kirby Underdale and one day at Bugthorpe, the rest at Thixendale, until he retired as the last blacksmith in Thixendale. Home Guard 1940. Died suddenly in 1992.

Dale Thomas (1805 approx – 1872) Born in Wilberfoss, Thomas Dale married Ann Bilbrough in 1828 and settled in Thixendale. He was a shoemaker 1828 – 1834, then a Publican for a couple of years, then back to shoemaking in 1839. A labourer from 1842 onwards. They had six daughters (Mary, Jane, Catharine, Sarah Bessie, Ann) and one son Francis. Thomas and Ann both died in the 1870’s in Thixendale.

Fox Rev. William (7th April 1832 – 1911) St. Mary’s Church Sledmere The Rev. William Henry Fox was the first vicar of St. Mary’s from 1871 to 1911. Born at his parents’ home in Stamford, Lincolnshire. Awarded his Bachelors degree in 1854 and ordained as a deacon at Lincoln the following year. Ordained as a priest in 1856 and received his Masters degree in 1857. First post was as Curate of Beeston, Nottinghamshire from 1858 to1859 and from there to Whitton in Lincolnshire 1859; Radcliffe-on-Trent 1859-1865 and Shelford in Nottinghamshire 1867-1870 before moving north to become the vicar of the village of Thixendale where he remained for the rest of his life. The two Heptons are almost certainly descended from the marriage of William Hepton at Westow c1795. He was born Hebden son of Christopher in 1775 and is Hebden on his marriage allegation and bond held at the Borthwick. A descendant of this family, Maree, is in Canberra. All Heptons and Hebdons that I have found so far become Hebden when you go back.

Sawdon / Sawden Thomas (1817 – 1890) Born in North Burton 1817 married Ann Vessey at Wharram le Street 6th June 1858. Thomas Sawden lived and worked at Painsthorpe Wold & Raisthorpe during his life. He died in Thixendale 18th July 1890. Ann died in Thixendale July 1897. The Registrar on both occasions was the village butcher, Robert Martin.

Thos. Sawden, baptised 1817 at North Burton, was my g.g.grandmother’s brother (my g.g.granduncle?). She was Adah Sawden baptised 1819 at North Burton. I can provide a family tree back as far as Thomas Sawden (b. abt. 1671 at North Burton)

Sharp Thomas Shepherd in Thixendale probably in early 1745 (Gregorian calendar). His baptism was at Wharram Percy on 2 Feb 1744/5 and states: “Baptised Thomas son of John Sharp Thixendale Labourer Feb 2nd”. His parents, John and Elizabeth SHARP nee KIRK married at Wharram Percy 14 Nov 1741. (5g grandfather of Graham Jaunay)

My Father (Leslie) was born in Thixendale on4th/12/1916 to Francis Oldfield Spaven and William Spaven. William died in the Flu epidemic in 1918. I am told they lived in the cottage next door to the village pub. Other children were Freda , Phylis, my grandmother Francis had a nickname ( I am told ) the petticoat poacher ?

Sykes Sir Christopher

( – 1801)

17th/18th Century Sledmere Sir Christopher Sykes inherited the Sledmere Estate in 1782. He started to accumulate land in and around Thixendale from 1786, and by 1793 was the major landowner. He created Gritts Farm, Gills Farm, and Manor Farm in 1795.
Sykes E School Registered as schoolmaster in 1892.

Williamson School The earliest known headmaster in the school was a Mr. Williamson, who retired in January 1888 after teaching in Thixendale for nearly 40 years. Possibly the William Williamson below.

Son of William and Elizabeth Williamson above. Married to Sarah Ann Ireland. Daughter Emma married gamekeeper Peter Grantham and was living in Holly Lodge (North Plantation?) in 1939.
